Welcome to the Jungle: Exotic Lautner in Malibu Asks $15 Million

Thatched pergolas, an abundance of tropical flora and an intimate setting backed up against the mountains will have you thinking Costa Rica or some other jungle locale, but this stunning post-and-beam property represents one of Malibu’s finest architectural homes. Built by none other than renowned architect John Lautner, the $15 million offering is less mid-century modern design than it is five-star resort.

The trophy home overlooks Malibu’s most coveted beach, Little Dume, and is enveloped in lush tropical landscaping that provides the perfect cover for the romantic haven. A primitive covered pathway leads the way to the one-acre summit, where the 3,650-square-foot home sits. Lined in luxuries, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home boasts heated sandstone floors, a chef’s kitchen and the Lautner-standard walls of glass, which enjoy sprawling ocean and mountain views. However, the property’s best features are clearly found outside the home, where the lush, one-acre grounds are punctuated with jungle gardens, a pebble-stone pool and an outdoor master steam room and rain shower. Last, but certainly not least, there’s even a place to drop anchor in the protected cove below.

Castle Rogue’s Manor in Eureka Springs, Arkansas for $1.8 Million (PHOTOS)

1222arcastle1 Castle Rogue’s Manor in Eureka Springs, Arkansas for $1.8 Million (PHOTOS)

When the topic of real estate in Arkansas comes up, probably the last type of home to pop into one’s mind is a castle. However, overlooking the White River in the town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas sits a massive estate with Middle Ages flair known as Castle Rogue’s Manor. Listed for $1.8 million, the 15,000-square-foot castle has been used primarily as a tourist and special events center over the past few years, and is currently insured as a museum.

Built in 1985, native woods such as black walnut, red cedar and salvaged redwood from the Ozarks were incorporated into the original design and take center stage throughout the interior of the 12-bedroom, 13-bathroom estate. Dubbed “A man’s home” in a feature by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, Castle Rogue’s Manor takes a major step into the realm of fantasy fortresses with a six-floor ‘Gate’s Keeper’ cottage, massive great hall, two guard towers and a number of other structures, all modeled in medieval cathedral-style.

Possible uses for the compound include turning the property into a resort or corporate retreat, but if you are going to pony up the coffers for such an estate, it seems like the way cooler option would be to turn it into one’s own personal stronghold, and rule the included 17-acres like the proverbial king (or queen) of the castle.

Rafael Viñoly-Designed Compound in Pennsylvania Listed for $30 Mil (PHOTOS)

1208blocks5 Rafael Viñoly Designed Compound in Pennsylvania Listed for $30 Mil (PHOTOS)

Having been well versed in the architectural genius of renowned Uruguayan designer Rafael Viñoly after profiling his 16,000-square-foot ‘Minimalist Masterpiece’ in Ridgefield, Connecticut in November, it comes with great delight to learn that another of his modern wonders has once again hit the real estate market.

Built in 1998, the colossal compound rests on a 70-acre parcel in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia that was, at one point in time, a former Revolutionary War rest stop of George Washington’s. Similar in style and design to another of Viñoly’s works, the Penang Residence in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Fort Washington home boasts a vast and open cobblestone courtyard that serves as the property’s core. The exterior of the massive estate is lined with “rough-hewn yellow and brown rock quarried near the site,” an appearance that is heightened by the use of tempered steel finishes, while a series of outdoor walkways connect various parts of the multi-level home.

The 37,000-square-foot floor plan features practically any and every amenity one could imagine, highlighted by a posh master suite that includes his and her marble baths, separate dressing rooms, office and, watch out now, a private tower retreat that rises above the rest of the home, giving way to stunning 360-degree views of the property. Also, much like the Umansky Home in Beverly Hills, Viñoly designed the interior with the original patron’s extensive collection of modern art in mind, and, as such, allows for a wealth of natural light to enter through various windows and light-wells.

And if those features weren’t enough, two tennis courts, one indoor and one outdoor, a 20,000-square-foot “playhouse,” giant swimming pool and pool house, a pair of stone farm houses and a three-bedroom apartment can also be found on the property.

Newly listed in Marathon, Florida is a one-of-a-kind real estate opportunity: a stunning private island utopia surrounded the mesmeric coral reefs of the Florida Keys.  Known as East Sister Rock Island, the 2,500-square-foot Bahamian style home is located a quarter mile off the coast and can be had for $12 million. The paradise property was built onto the coral reef itself and sits 15-feet above the water, offering panoramic 360-degree ocean views.

Previously offered as a ‘luxury private island rental’, the property comes complete with a large veranda that wraps around the home and brings the square-footage of the home to nearly 5,000-square feet of living space.  Inside, the three-bedroom, two-bath dwelling includes an open kitchen and dining area, entertainment room and wet bar.

Getting to and from the mainland can be accomplished one of two ways; the property includes not only a boat dock, but also a helicopter pad for travel.  When it comes to power the island home is entirely green, as wind turbines and solar panels located on the property supply a constant source of electricity.

Minimalist Masterpiece Manse in Connecticut an Embodiment of Modern Art (PHOTOS)

1115fairfield1 Minimalist Masterpiece Manse in Connecticut an Embodiment of Modern Art (PHOTOS)

Recently listed for $3.2 million in Ridgefield, Connecticut is a stunningly sleek modern manse that is as much a piece of modern art as the priceless collection it previously served home to.

Currently owned by Fairfield University, the 16,000-square-foot wonder was donated by Alice Lawrence, the widow of Manhattan real estate mogul Sylvan Lawrence, in December of 2010. Previously, Lawrence had used the mansion exclusively to house her modern artwork, a multi-million dollar collection that once included pieces by surrealist Rene Magritte, abstract expressionist Morris Louis, British expressionist Lucian Freud and French painter Fernand Leger, to name a few.

A design concept of internationally celebrated architect Rafael Vinoyl, whose resume boasts such eclectic and innovative structures as The Cleveland Museum of Art, Tokyo International Forum and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, the concrete ‘modern minimalist masterpiece’ resides on a five-acre hilltop and enjoys magnificent 50-mile views of the surrounding landscape.

The home itself is actually split into two separate wings; one wing, built into the lower curve of the structure, was created exclusively for guests and has its own basement garage. The other wing, found in the upper part of the structure, was designed specifically for the owner and includes a private tower complete with a library, terrace and penthouse office.  A common central area, formed by parallel, exposed concrete walls, join the two wings and features an incredible indoor lap pool set underneath a ceiling of glass.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ennis House Bought by Ron Burkle

ennisHouse 1428291c Frank Lloyd Wrights Ennis House Bought by Ron Burkle

The Ennis House has been purchased by billionaire magnate/philanthropist Ron Burkle, owner of the famed Greenacres Estate in Beverly Hills. Burkle purchased the largest of Frank Lloyd Wright’s textile block houses for about $4.5 M. The Los Angeles home was built for men’s clothing store owners Charles and Mable Ennis in 1924. The Ennises admiration for Mayan culture can be noted in the home’s design.

Wright’s textile block homes were constructed from patterned concrete blocks, used for interior and exterior structure and design. Unfortunately, the concrete structure endured substantial damage during the Northridge earthquake and in heavy rainstorms, placing the architectural monument on the endangered list. Burkle had supported the earlier phase of restoration.

According to The Los Angeles Times,  teenaged aspiring architect Burkle journeyed from his home to San Bernandino to visit  The Ennis House.  When he left a note requesting a tour, the owner contacted the teenaged boy with an invitation. Burkle sits on the board of the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy.

Because the home is  Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument #149 and on the National Register of Historic Places, Burkle will be required to open the home to the public at least 12 days per year. The Conservancy holds a detailed conservancy easement which will protect the landmark indefinitely.
